The
painting depicts the Brittany seacoast in France with furtive clouds and
seemingly endless sea. The trees and grasses are being
blown by the wind in one direction, and in the middle of the terrain
is a man frantically driving a carriage being pulled by two white horses.
Under a magnifying lens, the seeds of the amorseco, and the details of
the man and horses can be readily seen.
It won four (4) awards and gold medals abroad, namely: in Barcelona, Madrid, Pan American Exposition and Paris (rated Hors Concours – above competition). It is in perfect condition with no scratches or cracks inspite of its age.
In "Antes de la Tempestad," Hidalgo displays his knowledge of nature. It shows the sky and the clouds just before the outbreak of a tempest. It is the calm before the storm, the ominous peace and quiet of nature before she unleashes her anger and fury. The painting is a good example of Hidalgo's observant eye, as well as his deep feelings depicted through his eloquent brush.
